Watch PromoArtists focus most of their time and energy conceptualizing and creating art. It’s the most important part of an artist’s professional life. In order to successfully navigate the business side of the art world, artists also need to develop the skills necessary to express and promote themselves and their artwork, primarily through writing.
This course takes you by the hand and leads you step-by-step through the process of creating a simple and effective set of written documents that are standard requirements throughout the art world. You will learn about and draft your own artist biography, press release, and artist statement by following the instructor’s simple guidelines and by studying useful examples of each type of document. “Putting Art into Words” is an online class, so you will also have the opportunity to interact with other artists and work with them as all of you develop your writing skills for your art careers.
The eight modules in the course are designed to help you learn to write and edit effectively and to put your best foot forward in communicating with prospective schools, galleries, collectors, benefactors, and grant applications. Instructor Brainard Carey has years of experience helping artists hone their business skills so they may maximize their chances for success in their art careers.
At the end of the course, you will have new skills and usable documents that will serve you well in your future art endeavors.In an online workshop, you will learn how to refine or rewrite an artist statement as well as how to write a press release and a biography. This includes an online workshop classroom so you can get personal feedback and editing suggestions so that you leave the course with a finished statement, bio and press release.
Your Instructor

Brainard Carey is an author, artist and educator. He is the director of Praxis Center for Aesthetics and is currently faculty at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. He has written seven books for artists, including Making it in the Art World. His seventh book released in 2024 is The Problems in the Art World: An Artist's A-Z Action Guide. Carey interviews curators, writers and artists from all over the art world for Yale University radio. He also has a resource page for grants that is always updated. He is an educator and also an artist that has had major shows like The Whitney Museum Biennial.
